  • 2 cups frozen ripe banana slices (about 240g)
  • 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder (10g)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (240ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5ml)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey or pure maple syrup (15ml), optional
  • Optional add-ins: 1 tablespoon chia seeds or flaxseeds, or 1 scoop plant-based protein powder

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice ripe bananas, then freeze for at least 2 hours. Using frozen bananas is key for the creamy, thick texture. If you forget, use fresh bananas and add a few ice cubes.
  2. Place 2 cups of frozen banana slices, 2 tablespoons of raw cacao powder, 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, a pinch of sea salt, and 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup if using into a high-speed blender.
  3. Start blending on low speed, then increase to high. Blend for about 1 to 2 minutes until the shake is creamy and no banana chunks remain. Stop and scrape down the sides if needed.
  4. Check consistency: if too thick, add a splash more almond milk and blend briefly again; if too thin, add a couple more frozen banana slices or a few ice cubes and blend again.
  5. Taste the shake and add more honey/maple syrup or cacao powder if desired. Blend briefly to combine.
  6. Pour into your favorite glass and serve immediately. Optionally, sprinkle a few cacao nibs or shaved dark chocolate on top.

Notes

Use ripe, spotty bananas for maximum sweetness and smooth texture. Freeze bananas sliced for easier blending. Blend in stages starting slow then high speed to avoid overheating the blender. Keep liquids cold for best texture. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 24 hours and stir before drinking. Avoid freezing the shake after blending.
